Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is one of my favourite herbs because it is so easy to grow, easy to harvest and easy to use. Any one who knows me knows that I am a haphazard gardener who depends on hardy plants. I like it when they can look after themselves most of the time. That is incidentally one of the reasons that I love culinary and medicinal herbs, I feel that their hardiness lends a certain potency to their restorative powers.
Thyme can be grown in the ground or a pot and can be harvested with a pair of scissors as below.
The roots tend to be quite shallow, so if you don't use scissors you will inadvertently pluck half the plant out. Don't worry if you do. Just cover the roots back over, water and it will probably still be fine.
